Hi Melanie,

That puts an interesting perspective on it, re-the human rights campaigners. So do you think the release of the cables should have been done differently? More responsibly? or not at all?

Good peice, there is no going back, possibly for the better. But 1. the leaks need to be put in perspective and used as material for journalists to further investigate stories. The leaks are no exhaustive, maybe we are misreading one story because we only have one or two cables about it, when there might be so much more to it.
2. there IS a real threat to human rights activits who spoke freely because they knew it was a private discussion. I know that first hand from friends in Sri Lanka.

Fran's - yes, I agree. And the Uk & Us warning backfired anyway, as no doubt more people became interested. They would have done better to downplay it if they weren't going to stop it all together.

Couldn't agree more.

What would be interesting, in my opinion, is the analysis of a psychologist on the childish behaviour of US (and foreign) diplomats and their over-reaction to the leaks.
