I am a freelance journalist based in London. I have travelled across much of Latin America, and lived in the US, Ireland, Scotland and England.
I have spent a great deal of time working in Bolivia, and my interest in the politics of Latin America has led me to return to the region. During the summer I travelled to Venezuela to work on a project about women’s rights, and hope to continue working on some of the most important issues facing this area of the world. My next move is to Brazil, as I set out to cover the October 2010 race for the presidency.
Brazil’s elections are expected to have the highest women’s participation in the country’s history, and as charismatic leader Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva steps down after eight years, I plan to find out why more women in Brazil are voting than ever before, and what the country and the wider region can expect from Brazil’s new leader.

Interested in what you do. I have spent quite a bit of time travelling myself, through Central and South America. I was in Venezuela in January. Interesting situation down there. I went from Capetown to Jerusalem and back writing a book last year…and have done SE Asia and Colombia this year. Interested in how you got your start as a freelance journalist. Hope all goes well in Venezuela!

Hi Brandon,
The key to getting started as a freelancer is refusing to accept rejection.
Seriously though, journalism is all about experience, and the more you write the better you will be at it. And of course it is essential to pitch your ideas non-stop. If you like to travel, that helps, because the world of foreign correspondents is dwindling. Publications are more likely to accept freelance contributions from places where they don’t have anyone on the ground. My recommendation would be to find stories and start pitching! Beginning a blog could also be useful as it is a way for editors to see your work if you don’t have anything published yet. Best of luck and feel free to get in contact if you have anymore questions!
